wii balance board problem?

once i connected my balance board to my wii, my wiimote disconnected. i tried connecting my wiimote again, but it didnt work. i have had the wiimotes for over 2 years and they never failed connecting. my gamecube controllers still work though. i tried taking my balance board away, taking the batteries out of the balance board, but the wiimotes still did not connect. could anyone please help explain a solution? thanks
