japan

Destination Japan asked:
I’ve heard that ship is cheaper than airplane, but I have no idea for sure. If you know of a cheap way to Japan, please let me know. And where do I go to buy the tickets for the suggested method?

Need to know from where…

I’ve always had the best luck with travel agents. Plan in advanced.

Need to know where youre from. But anyways, I’m from Singapore. I just travelled to Japan a month ago. Cheapest return flight was on Thai Airways via Bangkok. Bought thru a travel agent.

And if you’re gonna travel around in Japan, you can’t miss buying the JR rail pass. Super worth-it for me :)

Huh, unless you live in Korea, ship travel is going to take ages.

There’s only one real way to travel… plane. China Airlines and Eva Air (both Taiwanese) have some good deals, though you’ll have to make a connecting flight in Taipei.

I don’t really recommend online travel agencies like Expedia. The flight prices they offer are often more expensive than those listed on the airline’s own website. They might a bit better for flight+hotel packages, but you never know until you contact the hotel for a price quote and compare for yourself.

And finally, if you’re going to be thrifty, then Japan might not be the place for your holiday. Personally, I’d set aside at least US$1500 for a week in Japan (including hotel but not including flight). Possibly even US$2000 if I’m going to travel around within Japan.

I don’t know about by ship. I went in 2006 with a travel agent (by plane) and it cost $1400 rt from Detroit to Nagoya, Japan. I did the same thing later through kintetsu out of Chicago and it was only $550 rt, but that depends on the time and date of course.

Take the drive to Seattle and fly from there. I always use a Japanese travel agency based in Los Angeles called Gateway LAX. They’ve always given me the cheapest tickets by far. I don’t remember their phone number but the URL is

(the timing of your ticket makes a big difference in the price of the ticket. The whole country pretty much has the same days off and the prices can double. If you’re traveling in the summer book your flight before the end of June)

And I’ve never heard of a ship being cheaper, besides it would take weeks.
