Another question about Japan for you guys. I’m considering buying a phone and international sevice plan while I’m in Japan (I’ll be there for a semester). Is this advisable? Are they outrageously expensive or reasonably priced? Will a calling card suffice? Thank you!

Timothy & Christina F added these pithy words on Jun 17 08 at 4:33 amThere are plenty of cell-phones and carriers available. I have Soft Bank (formerly Vodafone) and the plans are expensive and you get a very small number of minutes. I think texting is more popular, thus plans offer smaller minutes. If you’re only going to be here for a semester, a calling card is more practical- they are reasonably prices and quite accessible.

to me Brastel is one of the cheapest, for the phone plans, i was using AU when i first came here.
my mobil was only 1 yen and the monthly service was 3-3500 yen for student (from what i remember) with around 50 mins / month calling time.
by the way, it is one year contact only
